SHAKESPEARE

Our Shakespeare Journey

"Shakespeare can be lots of fun"

How did we start?

Through our Theatre partner, visits were organised to Newcastle Theatre Royal where the children all had the opportunity to take part in a drama workshop. Most classes experienced a guided tour and opportunity to walk on the stage. These visits culminated in Year 2 being invited to meet the cast, including the Gruffalo, have a photoshoot and see a live performance.

WHAT DID WE DO NEXT?

The lead teachers prepared for their first trip to Stratford-upon-Avon by completing their background reading, 'Would you risk it for Shakespeare?'

They each identified words or phrases that resonated with them and produced posters to reflect their understanding.  These were shared with colleagues before taking them to Stratford-upon-Avon to share with the other lead teachers around the country.
WHAT DID THE CHILDREN AND STAFF KNOW ALREADY?

In order to show the impact of studying Shakespeare for three years, we needed a baseline so we asked the question; what do you know about Shakespeare?

"Nothing"  Year 2
"I know a little bit about his life, my Nana has a Shakespeare book"   Year 3
"He's a boy and he wrote poems"  Year 4
"He's a famous actor who spoke in a British accent"  Year 5
"I know very little.  I didn't study it at school and to be honest I'm a a bit frightened of it.....It's the language"  Staff member
